Tensile strength is defined as: “the greatest longitudinal stress a substance can bear without losing function.”  Pilates enables us to learn to anchor the core by drawing upon a line of positive tension in the body.  As a workout modality, Pilates requires precision of movement in the presence of optimal alignment.

Pilates is a form of body conditioning that focuses on strengthening the core. The regimen encompasses more than 500 exercises that simultaneously stretch and strengthen muscles. This body of movement relies on the principle that before working the peripheral parts of the body, the core needs to be strong and stable. The eight principles of Pilates are whole body movement, breathing, balanced muscle development, concentration, control, centering, precision and rhythm.

The focus in Pilates is on the 'Powerhouse,' or deepest abdominal musculature, working the rest of the body as it radiates from this central core. Consistent sessions on both the mat and apparatus help clients develop balance and stabilization within their core.  This leads to improved strength, flexibility, stamina and function. As the Pilates student continues his/her study, improvements in overall health and wellness become apparent.

Pilates exercise stresses oppositional movement. Movement in one direction is lengthened and controlled into the next, while antagonistic muscles stabilize. This simultaneous lengthening and strengthening of the muscles creates energy and improves range of motion and function.

Pilates requires mental focus and concentration. As clients embrace the Pilates discipline, executing each exercise with precision and control, their bodies will improve and the mind will sharpen.

We work with individuals at all levels of competence and with any goal set; 13 year old soccer players, post-natal women, college and professional football and hockey players, fitness enthusiasts, golfers, senior citizens, etc.  The unifying goal with every individual is restoring and improving function.
